February 13, 2025
Due to unexpected weather conditions, the February meeting of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) was held virtually via Zoom. President Colleen P. convened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. with thirty-two members in attendance. Joyce L., Membership Chair, welcomed new CMQG members Mitch R., Lisa E., Leesa S., and Karen W. She also welcomed guests: Cynthia K., Brinda M., and Seth W. Joyce also announced that the guild currently has 66 members who have paid dues for 2025. She thanked all who have renewed their memberships and urged those who haven't yet renewed to do so by the end of the month.
Get ’ER Done Project Introduction:
Colleen P. Introduced the new Get ’ER Done project, a spin-off of the Ultimate Finisher program, led by Candy W. The project involves members choosing nine projects they want to complete or start, with a number drawn each month to determine the project to focus on. The incentive for completing projects is a chance to win gift certificates from a local quilt store at the end of the year. Candy also mentioned that there would be no cost to participate in the project, thanks to a generous donation. The number drawn this month was project five. Participants may submit their list of nine projects to Candy at the March meeting.
Member Spotlight:
Sharyn S. has been a CMQG member since 2019. Sharyn shared her passion for sewing and quilting. She recounted her first sewing machine, which she earned at 13. Sharyn started quilting 50 years ago when she made a baby quilt for her first niece. Sharyn also discussed her learning experiences at a quilting store in Salem and her various quilting projects, including an Irish chain quilt, an appliqué quilt, and a sea glass quilt.
Program:
The main program was led by Diana F., who discussed quilt math and the process of designing quilts. She emphasized the importance of starting with graph paper and deciding on the scale later. Diana also presented a table with standard bed sizes and suggested quilt sizes, along with the required batting and backing sizes. She noted that the quilt sizes are calculated based on the bed size and the desired drape. She explained how to calculate the number of binding strips needed for a project and how to adjust the size of traditional blocks. Diana also shared her approach to designing hexagons and circles, using online calculators and tables to simplify the process. Additionally, Diana shared her experience with using fat quarters and the importance of considering fabric shrinkage. Diana’s informative tables and links will be shared on the guild’s resource page.
Ultimate Finisher Drawing:
Marty S. conducted the Ultimate Finisher 2024 drawing, revealing that nine guild members participated in the activity. The third-place winner, Colleen P., received $18. The second-place winner, Sharyn S., received $27, and first-place winner, Sara P., received $45. Marty agreed to distribute the winning prize money either by mail or at the next meeting.
QuiltCon 2025:
Our quilt Collective Madness will be on display at QuiltCon. Our meeting on March 13, 2025 will feature members who attended QuiltCon. They will be sharing the best information from lectures and classes they attended. Additionally, they may share pictures of favorite/winning quilts shown at the event.
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show 2026:
March 31, 2025, is the submission date for applications to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Special Exhibit. The goal for CMQG is to submit 10 to 20 quilts for the exhibit. The unifying theme for the CMQG quilts is “The International Year of the Woman Farmer.’ It was suggested that displayed quilts should be within a 40- to 60-inch size range and should incorporate at least one modern quilt element. A color palette utilizing Bella solids will be determined in order to maintain a cohesive and visually appealing display for the exhibit. More information about the 2026 exhibit will be forthcoming as details are finalized.
