November Meeting Recap

We have a new website: https://corvallismodernquiltguild.org/. Sections are still in the works, but you can renew your Guild membership beginning now in the STORE.

Registration is now open for our first-ever Virtual Quilt Retreat (Jan. 8-10) and the two-day “Dancing with the Wall” Improv Workshop with Irene Roderick (Jan. 30-31.) Space is limited to 15 people for Irene’s class and CMQG members get first option, so sign up soon. Go to the STORE tab on the website.

Our December 10th Zoom “meeting” is our Holiday Party. No business, all fun: We hope you’ll plan to be there! Festive attire is encouraged: a hat/headband, jewelry, ugly Christmas sweater, pajamas or anything else you can think of.

We’ll toast the end of the year with our favorite cocktails/mocktails!

Here are a couple drinks found on Pinterest to get you in the holiday spirit! Recipes have not been tested.

To help us get to know each other better, please email Pattie your answers to the following four questions:

  • What is your current occupation (or previous career if you’re not currently working?)
  • When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
  • What’s something you’ve done in your life that no one would guess?
  • Name one thing on your bucket list of things you still want to do/accomplish.

We’ll email out a questionnaire to be completed before the meeting: whoever connects the most answers with the correct Guild member wins a prize (there may be fabric involved!)

For our Holiday Gift Swap, please check in with Pattie no later than December 1st. Let her know if you’ve finished your gift, who it’s for, and how it will be delivered. If possible, please delivery your gift on your own starting December 1st (contact a guild board member for your person’s address.) If this isn’t an option, by December 1st use a drop off location in Albany, SE Corvallis, or NW Corvallis (contact a board member for addresses.)

Make sure your gift is wrapped/bagged and tagged!

The meeting ended with an attempt to make a Scandinavian Star ornament. Here is the link to Betz White’s Tutorial and Mister Domestic’s YouTube video if you’d like to make one.

Improv Challenge 2020

CMQG Improv Challenge 2020Sponsored by Winter Creek Cloth!

Here are the guidelines… there aren’t many. Hey, it’s IMPROV! Quilt top only: no need to quilt and bind, so give yourself the freedom to play and experiment.
Choose your size and shape (but make it at least 24″ x 24″).
Select a minimum of three from the following improv piecing techniques and incorporate them into a quilt top:

  • wonky stars
  • triangles/flying geese
  • free-form curves
  • inserts
  • rings/roses
  • slabs/floating squares

Other techniques you want to try? GO FOR IT! Just include a minimum of three.

This challenge is voluntary and for personal growth only, to apply what you’ve learned about improv piecing– and specifically to get yourself out of your comfort zone! There are NO judges, so relax and enjoy the creative process.

Everyone who finishes a top and submits a photo by November 9th will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate, courtesy of our improv challenge sponsor, Winter Creek Cloth!
